Megaro Fytaki is a historic building in the city of Heraklion with a historical role in the economic, political, social life of the city until the early 70's. Megaro is the first multi-storey building in the city of Heraklion with residential apartments, built in 1926-1930, with remarkable neoclassical elements on the facades. It was built with the original purpose to house shops and offices on the ground floor and houses on the upper floors.
It is a representative example of an apartment building from the interwar period and a reference point for the urban development of Heraklion. It consists of ground floor and four floors. The load-bearing structure of the building is made of reinforced concrete. The neoclassical external morphological elements (architectural protrusions, cornices, pillars, entrance railings and balconies) and the relation of the openings in the facades compose a unique architecture in the city of Heraklion.
Unique in its details are the wooden front doors of the shops on the ground floor which are decorated with false representations with streaks and handmade carvings. Inside the building there are two large skylights. Most of the interior non-load-bearing walls have been demolished, but its static adequacy is in very good condition. All the above elements compose the meaning of the work of art and the historical monument. Nowadays Megaro Fytaki is MEGARON HISTORICAL MONUMENT HOTEL Click to visit official site..
